Careers Wales hosted an event at Coleg Sir Gar’s Pibwrlwyd campus to encourage Year nine and 10 school pupils from across south-west Wales to consider land-based courses as a career path.

250 pupils from 12 schools attended the college’s Land-based Careers Day and took part in taster sessions, giving them a feel for the vast and rewarding opportunities the industry has to offer. Pibwrlwyd and Gelli Aur offer a broad and exciting range of courses which were on display across the campus throughout the day, these included agriculture, agricultural engineering, animal care, equine studies, forestry and horticulture.

The workshops included an introductory sessions undertaken by LANTRA which gave an overview followed by two half-hour taster sessions. In these sessions, students were able to observe industry experts, sample lessons and view equipment, in addition to having the practical experience of meeting and handling animals.

It was beneficial for the students to explore the campus and they were also encouraged to engage in conversations with teaching staff, giving a thorough and hands-on experience of what a course at Coleg Sir Gâr and a future career in a land-based industry might entail.

Richard Spear, chief executive at Careers Wales, said: “There are so many roles that come under the broad umbrella of land-based courses and careers, and events like this one help to make learners aware of the range of courses and routes available to them.

“Land-based roles are significant in Wales, as agriculture is one of our main industries. Through practical workshops and advice from experienced professionals and teachers, we can engage with young people while they’re still in education and help make them aware of the possible career paths within the industry.”

The day was hugely successful, attracting a larger number of schools and pupils than any previous land-based careers event.
