An agricultural engineering student from Pembroke Dock has won the annual John Hancock Shield for an innovative agricultural engineering design.
Jordan Hill, 26, is a student at Coleg Sir Gâr’s Gelli Aur campus where he designed a vacuum spray system adaptable to weed wipers, which are used in crop management.
The brief asked students to design and manufacture a product to benefit the agricultural industry.
Jordan developed a design and produced a prototype, which reduces waste and protects the environment. “The system is mounted to the weed wiper and stops any leakage reaching unwanted areas such as waterways and crops,” said Jordan. “Each brush strand acts as a hollow straw, allowing a vacuum to collect run-on which is recirculated.”
Agricultural engineering lecturer Colin Jones said: “This award tests students’ abilities in research, design, business and manufacturing and always produces a number of very interesting and capable products to benefit the industry.”
The John Hancock shield is presented every year to help raise the profile of agricultural engineering and highlight the skills levels and careers in the industry.
