Coleg Sir Gâr Students' Union is celebrating being one of the first colleges in Wales to accept the NUS Wales Further Education Welsh Language Charter.

The college’s Students' Union president Sion Davies, who is also NUS Wales Welsh language officer has played an integral part in developing the charter for the further education sector in Wales, building on the success of the existing charter designed for higher education establishments.

Included within a number of recommendations in the new charter are that every students’ union should work to a bilingual policy, elect an officer responsible for the Welsh language and offer support for the Welsh speaking college community.

The charter, written by Sion Davies, a former St John Lloyd Catholic Comprehensive pupil, has been made specifically relevant for further education students. “After launching the FE Welsh Language Charter last year as NUS Wales Welsh Language Officer, I’m really thrilled that one of the first students’ union to formally acknowledge and accept the charter has been my own,” said Sion. “Being involved in the entire process from consultation to accepting the charter as president of Coleg Sir Gâr Students' Union has been fantastic.”

The charter has been written to include realistic and yet challenging recommendations.

Sion Davies added: “Coleg Gwent’s Students’ Union has also recently adopted the charter so it’s been really positive to see how well it’s been received and that my own students’ union has been one of the flagship NUS constituents to accept and start working towards fulfilling all of the recommendations in the charter.”
