A number of agricultural students at Coleg Sir Gâr have received scholarships from the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol to progress their Welsh-medium studies to university level.
Coleg Sir Gâr introduced a Welsh medium course at Gelli Aur campus to enable students to use their first and preferred language, which is valued in the agricultural industry. A high percentage of students on the extended diploma in agriculture have been successful this year.
Former Ysgol Pantycelyn student Aled Davies, who works on his family farm near Llangadog has won the main scholarship prize. Aled started his formal agricultural education at the college whilst he was in school as part of the schools link programme. He is a member of Llangadog YFC and has been very successful in YFC competitions across Wales, including gaining Junior Member of the Year and is always keen to develop his skills in agriculture.
Thirteen other students from Gelli Aur campus have been successful in gaining scholarships and will be joining Aled in September to start their degree.
Iwan Thomas, who is a Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol funded lecturer in agriculture at Coleg Sir Gâr, said: “Every student who has gained a scholarship to continue their studies with us has worked incredibly hard and have been successful in agricultural competitions outside of college”.
“We look forward to seeing them again in September when they will move up to degree level and study agriculture in the medium of Welsh and we’d like to thank the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol for awarding the scholarships.”
