Business students at Coleg Sir Gâr’s Graig campus in Llanelli are crafting their own community garden in partnership with Cardiff University, which will see home-grown vegetables donated to a Llanelli soup kitchen.
Trialling a new horticultural product developed at the university to increase sustainability, students will be testing the new Hydrosac which is a user-friendly hydroponics system which is said to yield a germination rate close to 100 per-cent.
Inspired by Incredible Edible Carmarthen who visited students to share their green-fingered knowledge, students were tasked to draw-up a plan to get the project off the ground.
The project has also involved college carpentry students who are building planters and beds.
Debbie Gill, Coleg Sir Gâr lecturer in business education, said: “The project is being undertaken as part of the Welsh Bac and students are supporting it with their business studies, creating newsletters and social media as well as volunteering in the garden.
“I think it’s fantastic that this project is able to give something back to our community.”
