A Coleg Sir Gâr student has won gold in a Skills Competition Wales event which tested his skills as a gym instructor.
Peter Byrd, from Lampeter, is studying a level two fitness instructor’s course, which qualifies students to work with clients in a gym.
Up against nine other competitors from Coleg Gwent and Pembrokeshire College, the brief was set to test qualities and skills required for the role of a fitness instructor, including assessment, communication, programme design, correct technique and application of exercise, safety, evaluation and motivation.
The competition received 79 applications in the form of exercise programmes and as a result, 10 were chosen to take part in the final to deliver their programme.
Rhian Davies, lecturer in sport at Coleg Sir Gâr said: “This is the first year the college has run the fitness instructor’s course so we’re thrilled to have won gold.
“Peter works consistently hard and is really embracing the course and I’m sure he has a bright future ahead in the sports industry when he finishes this year.”
