A Coleg Sir Gâr health and social care student has been awarded first place in a competition which could put her in the running to be selected to compete for the UK.

17 year-old Mared McNally and 16 year-old Jasmine Evans are both studying level three diplomas at Coleg Sir Gâr.  As a result of their previous success in an all-Wales competition, they progressed to a regional heat at South Devon College where Mared was awarded first place.

The event is intense and requires competitors to undertake role plays involving caring for an elderly lady with various health conditions, working with a younger adult with learning difficulties, a consultation with a patient using observations and completing an exam paper.

The competition is open to level three students studying at college or who are in employment.

Kirsty Williams, lecturer in health and social care at Coleg Sir Gâr, said: “We are thrilled with the result of the competition and with the quality of performance from both Mared and Jasmine. “This competition highlights the importance of professional care which is crucial within the health and social care sector and is one of the key philosophies along with the associated practical skills that we teach on the course.”
